Sustainable tourism

We settled here in the small community of Punta Cuchillo in 2007. Ever since we have been doing sea kayaking, sport fishing and other boat adventures in here Costa Rica, and we have done what we can to ensure that our tours will contribute to positive development in this area. Together with our guests and other contributors we will continue to support selected projects and initiatives on the Nicoya Peninsula and Punta Cuchillo in particular.

Bahia Rica Adventures creates much needed jobs in the small community of Punta Cuchillo and the nearby little town Paquera. When we organize trips in this tropical paradise, we have a responsibility. Any trip affects our environment and the places we visit. We are therefore very keen to show respect for the local nature and culture - and to limit the footprint we leave behind us.

By being aware of this, we believe our tours have a positive effect - in that they are helping to create important jobs and generate income for local people.

Today, sustainable tourism, a concept for most, and it’s about involving local people and to preserve nature and culture of the places we visit. Sustainable tourism is the future for any tourist destination.

Currently, we support a couple of good projects/initiatives. You as a guest can make a voluntary contribution to the projects - when you book a stay or a tour with Bahia Rica, you can let us know that you want to support the projects. If you want your contribution to be paid to one particular of the projects, you can also specify this. If you do not have any special requests, your contribution is distributed equally among the projects.

The initiatives we are currently supprting or organizing are:

The primary school at Punta Cuchillo.
We have since 2008 been contributing to the tiny primary school here in our community. The school practically lacks everything, so our help has been everything from and expensive water treatment plant, to small but valuable contributions like prices for their bingos.

Reforestation Project in the Paquera area.
We are involved in a communcal project in the Municpality of Paquera, where we in sections are planting trees. The planting of the trees ingaged an incredible number of people and organizations, and will be repeated every year.

Local Art.
So many talented people never manage to promote and display their work. We only use loal artist when we decorate here at Bahia Rica, and we also have a little suvernir store where some local artist get to dispay and sell their art.

Kayak Ocean Clean Up
This is our own little environmental program. We invite tourists to volunteer some hours to help cleaning plastic and other trash in the water. We provide kayaks for free, and also take care of bringing the trash and what is recycable to the local recycling center.

Street Dogs and Cats Rescue
We have initiated our little rescue projusct together with Yanixa (our cook on the Isla Tortuga boat tour). We take care of street dogs and cats in the area (feeding, castrating and deworming). We also find forever homes for the rescues.
