Fishing Is for Everyone! Bahía Rica Supports Women’s Empowerment Through Escuela Para Naúticas

Posted on October 23, 2026

17 women, one month of training, and a shared passion for the ocean!

At Bahía Rica Adventures, we believe that the ocean is for everyone. Whether you’re a man, woman, or child, sport fishing is about passion, adventure, respect for marine life, and the unforgettable excitement of catching your dream fish.

That’s why we were proud to play an active role as both organizer and sponsor of the Escuela Para Naúticas for women, a wonderful initiative bringing new opportunities for women in sport fishing to the Paquera region.

Working Together for a More Inclusive Fishing Community

Together with the Visit Paquera an initiative from the Comité de Turismo Sostenible , through the Asociación de Desarrollo para la Juventud de Paquera (ADEJ), Bahía Rica helped organize and support this exciting training program.

We are especially delighted that FECOP, the Costa Rican Sport Fishing Federation (Federación Costarricense de Pesca Deportiva), has included the Paquera region in its efforts to promote education, opportunities, and greater female participation in sport fishing.

Over the course of an entire month, 17 enthusiastic women participated in a combination of classroom sessions and hands-on training, developing skills in fishing techniques, equipment handling, knot tying, marine electronics, responsible fishing practices, and proper catch-and-release techniques.

The final week was all about putting theory into practice! The participants headed out on sport fishing boats for hands-on experience on the water, applying everything they had learned throughout the course. From handling fishing gear and practicing different techniques to the excitement of hooking and landing some fantastic fish, it was the perfect way to finish an inspiring month of learning!

Our Captains Sharing Their Knowledge

We were particularly proud to see four of our own Bahía Rica captains actively involved as instructors.

Captain Thomas, Captain Chato, Captain Christian, and Captain Steven shared their experience, practical skills, and passion for fishing with the participants.

For us, this is what community involvement is all about: sharing knowledge, encouraging others, and helping create opportunities for the next generation of fishing enthusiasts and professionals.

Breaking Stereotypes, One Cast at a Time!

Sport fishing has traditionally been a male-dominated activity, but times are changing, and we’re excited to be part of that change!

Over the years, we’ve welcomed countless anglers aboard our Bahía Rica boats, including many incredible women who have experienced the thrill of landing their dream fish or the catch of a lifetime.

We’ve seen firsthand that passion for fishing has nothing to do with gender. It’s about loving the ocean, embracing the adventure, and respecting the incredible marine life that makes our Gulf of Nicoya so special.

By supporting initiatives like Escuela Para Naúticas, we hope to encourage more women to discover the opportunities that sport fishing offers, whether as recreational anglers, fishing guides, captains, or future leaders in marine tourism.

A Big Congratulations!

Congratulations to all 17 women who completed this inspiring month of learning, challenges, and new experiences!

A heartfelt thank you to FECOP, our fellow organizers, instructors, and everyone who helped make this initiative possible.

At Bahía Rica, we believe fishing is for everyone. And the more people who share our passion for the ocean and its conservation, the brighter the future of sustainable sport fishing in Paquera!

Pura vida from the Bahía Rica team!
