Covid testing at Costa Rican airports

Both Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near San José and Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Guanacaste, offer on-site coronavirus testing for outgoing travelers.

This gives passengers the ability to get tested on the same day as their flight, and it removes the complication of having to find a nearby lab with availability.

At both airports, the tests are conducted by Laboratorios Echandi in a partnership with Morpho Travel Retail.

While walk-ins are accepted, the lab recommends making a reservation at: https://covid.morphotr.com/

First check what test you need to get for your destination country. This article in Tico Times gives a quick guide of the what, when, how and prices.

SUP competition

SUP ToursOur precious gulf of Nicoya is the venue of the first Stand Up Paddle race since the pandemic started – and we are participating!

SUP boarding is one of the activities we offer here at Bahia Rica, and the area is just perfect for practicing flat water paddling.

Here at Bahia Rica, Vigdis has always paddled a lot, mostly kayak. This year the focus has been on the SUP boarding, and she will for the first time enter an official race.

So wish her luck – hopefully she will make a good figure for Bahia Rica in the race tomorrow at O’Pacifico.

Los Mundo – SUP & Bioluminescence

Los Mundo: Visit from a traveling family of 5 from Spain.

Traveling the world already for 2 years in a camper, and they have spent the last half year here in Costa Rica not being able to move around much due to the Covid-19 restrictions. But now as most restrictions have been lifted, they are exploring.

We were delighted to be visited by this lovely family!
Here at Bahia Rica they tried Stand Up Paddleboarding for the first time, and of course they had to join our night time bioluminescent kayak tour.

Their YouTube videos are so fun to watch. Here is the one from when they visited us here at Bahia Rica.

We’re a Top Ethical Costa Rica Ecotour 2020!

We’re more than just a tour company. We care about the wildlife we showcase, the local communities we visit and the opportunities for education through exploration. That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’re a Top Ethical Costa Rica Ecotour 2020!

The Top Ethical Costa Rica Ecotours 2020 is a unique list generated by a global community of travellers, bloggers, conservationists, tour guides and ecotourism operators. Curated by Terra Incognita – a social enterprise seeking to promote the best examples of ethical ecotourism worldwide – we’re part of a group of 40 incredible tours from across Costa Rica.

First launched in 2019, the list includes 40 tours across the country of ‘pura vida’.

“Costa Rica is often the first place that comes to mind when we hear the word ‘ecotourism’, yet it can still be challenging for visitors to choose a responsible tour”, said Kristi Foster of Terra Incognita.

The list includes a transparent explanation of how all tours contribute to conservation, local communities and education, and is open to reviews from guests who’ve participated in the tours.

Tour operators on the list are doing everything from cleaning up beaches and donating to community projects, to offsetting their carbon emissions and encouraging their guests to do the same. Some are actively contributing to conservation research, while others are empowering local conservation ambassadors through environmental education and capacity building.

“We are continually blown away by what operators are doing to have a positive impact on wildlife and local people through tourism,” said Dr Nick Askew of Terra Incognita. “We’re excited to be able to share this with tourists so they can contribute to travel that does good.”

“Even though ecotourism is fairly well established in Costa Rica, there’s still so much to discover”, said Kristi. There are many small, local and family-run ecotourism companies offering once-in-a-lifetime experiences while supporting the country’s natural and cultural heritage”.

Experiences highlighted range from kayaking with us at Bahia Rica in bioluminescent waters off Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, to observing dolphins on the Osa Peninsula, to exploring Costa Rica’s Corcovado National Park in search of the Critically Endangered tapir, sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, caimans and more.

With 40 tours across the country you can find a once-in-a-lifetime ethical experience that suits your interests, budget and adventure level.

1000kg less trash in the ocean

Kayak Ocean Clean UP

Bahia Rica Adventures works to reduce the amount of garbage floating in our coastal waters. The idea is simple – get a free kayak trip in return for collecting and separating the trash and sharing this on social media. We also share our knowledge, and help people of all ages get out on our beautiful oceans and take action.

Today we we reached a milestone: Since May this year we have collected over
1 TON (1000KG!!!!!) of trash from the ocean!

Ocean waste is a global threat – Let’s face it together!

Costa Rica celebrates 199 years of independence

Today we are celebrating 199 years of independence in Costa Rica. We are extremely happy to call this beautiful country our home.

A beautiful country, with a beautiful flag and national seal!

The National Seal of Costa Rica features three green volcanoes representing the nation’s three principal mountain ranges, a distinct Central Valley, the two oceans of the Pacific and Caribbean that border the nation, and merchant ships that symbolize commerce and the country’s maritime history.

A rising sun represents Costa Rica’s prosperity, and the seven stars in the sky are for the country’s seven provinces. Two myrtle branches, above the words “Republica de Costa Rica”, symbolize Costa Rica’s peaceful nature.
The seal is framed in gold with small circles that represent coffee, known in Costa Rica as “golden beans”.

Travel safe with us!

Inspection ICTThe last months we have worked on improving our tours to have an even better experience to offer now that we can resume operations. A big part of this has of course been the adjustments we have to make to fulfill the sanitary protocol now needed due to Covid-19.

We are happy to inform that we scored 100% on today’s surprise inspection from ICT (the National Institute of Tourism).

It is very important for us that our activities are safe for both travelers and our staff.

We are committed to always follow the protocols, and we do expect the same from our clients.

By nature our activities are convenient in the scene that we only operate with smaller groups and in open air. With us you will be out on the water in a boat, kayak or paddle board – away from crowds and high risk areas.
