Whale watching season!

The humpback whales are cruising the Costa Rican waters, and these months they come all the way into the gulf. We mostly encounter moms and babies. Book your special trip with us to see these gentle giants now.

We cruise around small islands, past spectacular rocky coast lines and beautiful sand beaches on our search for the whales. Sometimes they hang out more out in the open water, and other times they are all the way in close to shore.

We are very often entertained by the baby jumping and making a show, while the mom swims alongside it. Every so often we are rewarded by a huge breach from the giant mom as well.

Ocean Clean Up Sept. 18th!

We are joining a huge effort on the whole Nicoya Peninsula on September 18th. Together we call on everyone to join us doing massive clean up of the ocean and the beaches of the peninsula.

We hope to see a huge number of volunteers cleaning the beaches on our peninsula. We are joining the effort with our Kayak Ocean Clean Up project.

Join us on September 18th and help us clean our ocean.

SUP competition

SUP ToursOur precious gulf of Nicoya is the venue of the first Stand Up Paddle race since the pandemic started – and we are participating!

SUP boarding is one of the activities we offer here at Bahia Rica, and the area is just perfect for practicing flat water paddling.

Here at Bahia Rica, Vigdis has always paddled a lot, mostly kayak. This year the focus has been on the SUP boarding, and she will for the first time enter an official race.

So wish her luck – hopefully she will make a good figure for Bahia Rica in the race tomorrow at O’Pacifico.

Los Mundo – SUP & Bioluminescence

Los Mundo: Visit from a traveling family of 5 from Spain.

Traveling the world already for 2 years in a camper, and they have spent the last half year here in Costa Rica not being able to move around much due to the Covid-19 restrictions. But now as most restrictions have been lifted, they are exploring.

We were delighted to be visited by this lovely family!
Here at Bahia Rica they tried Stand Up Paddleboarding for the first time, and of course they had to join our night time bioluminescent kayak tour.

Their YouTube videos are so fun to watch. Here is the one from when they visited us here at Bahia Rica.

We’re a Top Ethical Costa Rica Ecotour 2020!

We’re more than just a tour company. We care about the wildlife we showcase, the local communities we visit and the opportunities for education through exploration. That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’re a Top Ethical Costa Rica Ecotour 2020!

The Top Ethical Costa Rica Ecotours 2020 is a unique list generated by a global community of travellers, bloggers, conservationists, tour guides and ecotourism operators. Curated by Terra Incognita – a social enterprise seeking to promote the best examples of ethical ecotourism worldwide – we’re part of a group of 40 incredible tours from across Costa Rica.

First launched in 2019, the list includes 40 tours across the country of ‘pura vida’.

“Costa Rica is often the first place that comes to mind when we hear the word ‘ecotourism’, yet it can still be challenging for visitors to choose a responsible tour”, said Kristi Foster of Terra Incognita.

The list includes a transparent explanation of how all tours contribute to conservation, local communities and education, and is open to reviews from guests who’ve participated in the tours.

Tour operators on the list are doing everything from cleaning up beaches and donating to community projects, to offsetting their carbon emissions and encouraging their guests to do the same. Some are actively contributing to conservation research, while others are empowering local conservation ambassadors through environmental education and capacity building.

“We are continually blown away by what operators are doing to have a positive impact on wildlife and local people through tourism,” said Dr Nick Askew of Terra Incognita. “We’re excited to be able to share this with tourists so they can contribute to travel that does good.”

“Even though ecotourism is fairly well established in Costa Rica, there’s still so much to discover”, said Kristi. There are many small, local and family-run ecotourism companies offering once-in-a-lifetime experiences while supporting the country’s natural and cultural heritage”.

Experiences highlighted range from kayaking with us at Bahia Rica in bioluminescent waters off Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, to observing dolphins on the Osa Peninsula, to exploring Costa Rica’s Corcovado National Park in search of the Critically Endangered tapir, sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, caimans and more.

With 40 tours across the country you can find a once-in-a-lifetime ethical experience that suits your interests, budget and adventure level.
